Joe Ngai is a Principal in McKinsey & Company's Hong Kong office, where he leads the Private Equity/Principal
Investor practice, as well as co-leads McKinsey's Insurance and Asset Management practice in Asia. Since 2002,
he has focused on serving leading financial institutions across Asia, as well as leading Private Equity investors
in their Asia investments. His recent experiences at McKinsey include:
- Developing the private banking strategy for a Global universal bank across Asia, particularly in the
onshore markets. Focused on strategy to capture some of the key opportunities emerging from the shifts in
regulatory and customer trends
- Defining the strategy for China's leading investment bank. Responsible for developing its overall strategy
in investment banking and capital markets, as well as expansion in wealth management and private equity
- Leading the due diligence effort of a leading PE firm on an investment in the Chinese financial sector,
with a focus on the SME and the leasing sector
- Leading a strategy project for a new-established $200 billion Asian sovereign wealth fund. He led the team
in defining the 3-year strategic direction, the organizational model, and the implementation roadmap
- Leading the due diligence effort of a leading PE investor on a large SOE company in the chemicals industry
in China, with a focus on synergies resulting from Chinese-foreign acquisitions
- Leading the strategy and implementation program for development a new asset management business for a leading
Chinese integrated financial group
- Diagnosing and developing recommendations in risk management and investment management for one of the largest
domestic insurance companies in Asia with over $50 billion in AuM
- Leading a transformation program for one of the largest Taiwan financial holding companies (FHC). The program
include reorganization of the FHC into customer-oriented business groups, setting up the corporate center,
building performance management systems, and setting the strategy for the Wealth Management and Consumer
Finance units
- Planning an acquisition bid of one of the largest Chinese national banks for a leading Chinese financial
institution. He led the strategy planning for the acquisition, preparation for due diligence, and
structuring the PMO (project management office) to lead the acquisition effort
- Leading a fundamental transformation of a leading Chinese insurance company in preparation for its public
listing. Initiatives include restructuring the sales force (including the elimination of 100,000 agents),
redesigning the training system, revamping compensation plans and designing a sales stimulation program to
improve sales effectiveness
Before joining McKinsey, Mr. Ngai worked as an executive director at Aptium Partners (now part of Cowen Group),
a boutique financial advisory firm catering to mid-market companies in Asia (especially China). Previously, he
also co-founded an IT systems integration company and led its development to 200 employees across Asia.
Mr. Ngai received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and his A.B. in
economics, Phi Beta Kappa, from Harvard University. He was a member of the New York Bar Association. He sits
on the Steering Committee of Youth Business HK, a non-profit organization targeted at funding youth entrepreneurs,
and he is also a founding member of Social Ventures Hong Kong, a non-profit pioneer in promoting and investing in
social enterprises in Hong Kong. He is a native speaker in Cantonese, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English.
