Mary W. Darby is a Senior Research Scholar at the Chazen Institute of Columbia Business School. Her main research interests are China's international capital markets and cross-border investment and she conducts faculty seminars focusing on developments in these areas. Her most recent publication appeared in China at the Crossroads, Columbia University Press, 2007. Ms. Darby is also the co-founder and Managing Director of Peridot Asia Advisors, LLC.
Ms. Darby has had more than 25 years of China and Asia-related experience working in the financial services industry and with Fortune 100 companies. Ms. Darby was the first US businesswoman to travel to China after the historic Nixon-Kissinger opening in 1973. Ms. Darby has advised on market-opening strategies for China/Asia and negotiated many multi-million dollar transactions. These efforts included helping Chase establish its first banking presence in China, the first IBM computer sale to the Bank of China, Fluor's first cost-reimbursable contract with China, the first sale of chemicals to China for Allied Chemical, the first long-term hydroturbine technology agreement for Allis-Chalmers, and SWT's first countertrade agreement with China, as well as other major transactions.
Previously, Ms. Darby was Acting Head of the Hong Kong office of Morgan Stanley Investment Management. In that capacity one of her responsibilities was the development of the MS investment management entry strategy for China. Before transferring to Hong Kong, she was Head of Morgan Stanley's Asia desk in New York. Prior to that Ms. Darby was the Executive Director of the America-China Society, an organization chaired by Henry A. Kissinger and the late CyrusVance. She worked closely with the Board of Directors and traveled with Dr. Kissinger and other members of the Board to China for meetings with China's Premier, other Chinese ministers and other Asian leaders. She also worked as Senior Director- China for Sears World Trade, with line responsibility for all of SWT's China-related operations involving New York, HK and Beijing offices. She also worked as Corporate Vice President for Allis-Chalmers, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Allied Chemical Corporation.
She received her BA from Princeton University, and her MBA and MIA degrees from Columbia University. Ms. Darby presently serves as Trustee, International House; Board Director, Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College; Director, East Asian Studies Advisory Board of Princeton University; Trustee, Princeton-in-Asia; and Governor, OTR Series Board of the Foreign Policy Association.. Ms. Darby is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She has an excellent command of Mandarin.
